The Style Shop is a fashion design and silkscreening studio. The shop has sewing machines, design and layout tables, and a stock of fabric, clothing and notions for students to use for projects. Our screen printing studio has computer stations with Photoshop for designing images, a dark room for developing images on screens, a project area for printing, and a specialized screen washing area.

In Style Shop , students create their own custom-made fashions and accessories. Students begin with a variety of projects such as logo design, computer design, and basic screen printing. As they progress through these projects they learn to sew and do alterations, building all the skills necessary for creating quality fashions. In workshops with visiting artists, students pursue advance fashion skills they are interested in including knitting, dyeing, and advanced graphic design. After their initial training, students work with staff mentors to set their own goals which may include producing more complex designs, creating a fashion line, or doing design and printing for other people. As they advance, students create a business models, budgets and marketing campaigns for their products or services.

Adult Classes Offered in Style Shop this February!

January 11, 2012

If you know anything about the programming we offer to our middle school students here, you know that each program tackles some pretty cool stuff. If you’ve ever thought “Hey, I’d like to know how to do that,” finally, here is your chance!

For three hours every Saturday in February, join Jill in Style Shop & learn the basics of sewing, just like our students do! You do not need to have any previous experience- all equipment, tools, instruction, & some fabric is supplied.

For the low cost of $80, you can reserve your spot in this limited-availability class. Learn to use a sewing machine, read a pattern, & much more. Over the course of four weeks, sew your own pillowcase, reversible tote bag, & stylish tunic!

Reserve your spot by contacting us with your deposit (contact@workshophouston.org or 713.807.7911), & come prepared to sew!

Schedule of Style Shop Adult Classes:

Saturdays, February 4th, 11th, 18th, & 25th, 9am-12pm.

(*Please Note: No make-up times have been allocated for this class- please be sure to clear your schedule in order to make it to these sessions. Class size is limited to the first five people who register- secure your spot today!)

Style Shop Goes to the Quilt Festival!

November 4, 2011

Thursday, November 3rd, Style Shop headed downtown to look at some amazing work at the International Quilt Festival. While the students of Style Shop may be tackling some ambitious sewing projects during their time at Workshop Houston, nothing quite prepared us for the intricate designs and impressive sewing that was on display here.

Students especially enjoyed the Wearable Art section of the show, which displayed quilted clothing. Another big hit was the quilts which were created with sparkling thread.

Making a quilt is a huge undertaking, and the students were impressed by the amount of work that goes into something so lasting and beautiful. When asked to pick just one as their favorite, students said they absolutely couldn’t choose one quilt over another. We are already looking forward to going back next year!

Style Shop Tackles Pattern Sewing

October 19, 2011

Sewing is something that many people know how to do, at least a little bit. Sewing clothing from a pattern, though, is a whole different story.

Style Shop is so proud to showcase some of our really talented sewing superstars. These girls have worked through Workshop Houston’s sewing curriculum, learning the basics, and are now at the level of sewing from a pattern. Some of their works can be seen here!

For more clothing sewed (and designed!) by some of our middle school participants, be sure to join us on Sunday, October 30th, at Premium Goods clothing store in the Rice Village between 2 & 5pm. We’ll be strutting our stuff in a fashion show that afternoon!

All the original works these students make will be modeled on Sunday, October 30th at  Premium Goods (in the Rice Village). More details on all that coming very soon!

Style Shop Students’ Fun with Photoshop

September 21, 2011

It’s been a hectic week in Style Shop! As we introduce many brand-new students to the concepts of sewing, drawing,

Halima & her new shirt

and screen printing, many of our returning students have jumped back into using Photoshop. With just a little refresher in the concepts and ideas behind using such a complex computer program, students have been able to create their own one-of-a-kind images.

We don’t stop there, though. The next step is to take these images and use them to create truly unique articles of clothing. Check out Halima and her design creations here!
