Workshop Houston Goes Solar!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

This January, Workshop Houston is scheduled to begin producing electricity through a 2.6 kw photo-voltaic array right here on our roof!  The solar panels are being donated by Green Mountain Energy, and the installation is being donated by Standard Renewable Energy .

This array will help our organization be more sustainable, reducing our contribution to pollution and global warming while also saving us money on electrical costs! Thanks to everyone at Green Mountain and Standard Renewable.

Recovering from Ike with strength.

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Hurricane Ike affected everyone that lives in Houston and many people in the surrounding areas as well.  We feel lucky that no trees fell onto our buildings, but we did sustain quite a few small damages that piled up into a fairly big job.  We have responded well, immediatly fixing the damaged roofs, broken windows and other odds and ends.  There were three large trees that had fallen across the street that we helped to clear as well.  The whole city, third ward not excluded responded to Ike with neighborly compassion.  When I asked one of the children that frequents the bikeshop what he thought of the storm he replied, “It made people nicer.”  Hopefully the community togetherness we all experienced after this storm will stay with us.
